Pattern Sizes

This tutorial includes a free pattern in one size to fit a head circumference of approximately 22 inches. If you would like to create a cap in a different size, you can easily adjust the pattern by measuring the head circumference and using the measurements to scale the pattern up or down.

How To

Follow these simple steps to create your own cadet cap:

Step 1: Create the Pattern

Print out the pattern and cut out the pieces. Follow the diagram that comes along with the pattern to join the pieces together. Then, use the pattern to cut out the fabric pieces. You can choose to use one pattern piece for the main cap or you can add a contrasting piece for the band, top, or bottom parts of the cap.

Step 2: Cut the Interfacing and Lining

Use the pattern pieces to cut out the interfacing and lining pieces. The interfacing should be ironed to the wrong side of the main fabric pieces, while the lining fabric is optional.

Step 3: Sew the Cap's Top and Lining Together

Place the main fabric pieces right sides together and sew along the top curve. Repeat the same for the lining pieces. Then, pin and sew the top fabric and lining pieces right sides together, leaving a small gap to turn it the right way out.

Step 4: Sew the Cap's Band

Take the band pieces and sew them right sides together with the interfacing in between. Fold the band in half and place the seams at the center back of the band. Transfer the reference points to the main fabric pieces and pin the band to the main fabric piece, with right sides facing each other. Sew along the edge of the band and the main fabric. Repeat the same for the other side of the cap.

Step 5: Attach the Elastic

Attach the elastic to the center back of the cap's band, leaving a little tail. This will be sewn down in the final step.

Step 6: Sew the Cap's Top and Band Together

Place the top and the band right sides together and pin them. Then, sew along the edge and turn the cap to the right side.

Step 7: Finish the Cap

Sew the elastic tail to the base of the band at the back of the cap. Hem the bottom edge of the band up to the outer edge.

And viola! Your own handmade cadet cap ready to wear. This tutorial is versatile, and you can use a variety of fabrics to create different styles and looks. So get creative and experiment with different colors, prints and textures to create the perfect cap to suit you.
